It was the Clyde Valley Falcons ( 14 to 16 kitted team ) who went through to the Jack Kane centre in Edinburgh, where the Edinburgh Wolves were hosting a 4 team tournament on Saturday 23rd May 2009.  The teams taking part were the Wolves, Inverclyde Nix The Tigers and our own Falcons.

The first game for the Falcons was against the hosts the Wolves. The Falcons had retained a lot of last years players and gained some more new talent as well.  They took to the field with Nicky Farrell playing in the role of QB this year.  He marshaled the team really well and had scores by Samuel's Woods Filmer Mulhern and Sinclair . In the end they just had to much experience for the Wolves and ran out comfortable winners by 44-0.  Scorers were Woods 3 tds , Fallon 1 td, McCallum 1 td, Filmer 1 td and Sinclair 1 td.

It was the turn of the new kids the Nix from Inverclyde to come against the British Champions. On the first play the Falcons handed off to Woods at Running Back who tore the defense to pieces with his lightning speed.  It was overheard on the Nix sideline, “he is well rapid!", although unfortunately for him it was to be his last play in the half as he injured his ankle.  The rest of the payers stepped up to the mark though, and even after the Nix gave them a fright when they scored on the very next drive there was to be no rising from the ashes for the Nix, but a severe dowsing of their flames as the Falcons went to work and ran out very comfortable winners by a score line of 51-12.  Scorers were Samuels 3 tds, Filmer 1 td, Sinclair 1 td and Woods 2 tds.  Coach Gillespie did say that for a new outfit they looked as though they could learn fast and he is sure they will do a lot better as the year goes on.

Then it was the BIG ONE… Tigers v Falcons; a replay of last year’s British finals.  The Tigers went into this match as slight favourites as the Falcons had lost their starting running back, Woods .

The Tigers went up field and scored right away then the Falcons did the same.  At this point injuries started to take hold as the tackling was ferocious.  Some of the tackles going in by young Orr were bone jerking and he lifted the team right up with his leadership skills.  QB Farrell, spread his passes out all over the place and Filmer and Samuels took over the running duties with great effect.  As the Tigers lost more players the depth of squad then came to the fore.  The Falcons, having the bigger squad, crept slowly but steadily away from the Tigers, finally taming them and beating them bye 40-18.  Scoreres were Samuels 4 tds, McCallum 1 td and Mulheron 1 td. This meant Falcons won the overall tournament and gained the first points to getting to the finals again this year.

When interviewed at the end Coach Farrel of the Falcons said, "We are really pleased at the way the boys played today.  We have worked hard on our passing game on the offense and the defensive side of the ball in the off season."

Coach Gillespie added, "This is a team game and to play as well as a team today after we lost young Woods was very pleasing indeed.  I thought Filmer,  Samuels and Orr really played well today, and the rookies show they will challenge for their spots as starters in the team.  We would love a shot at repeating last year but lets take it a step at a time .1 down 3 to play for".

Clyde Valley would like to thank their sponsors James Chapman Quality Butchers, Robert Weir, De Niros, Red Line Cabs, Jack Daniels - Public House, Reflections Car Valeting, South Lanarkshire DIY and the chain crew who did a fantastic job.
